The Sony FE 600mm f/4.0 GM OSS Lens is a Sony E Mount lens, and is currently the world's lightest 600mm f/4 lens, designed to take advantage of the world's fastest cameras. The FE 600mm f/4 is able to reach speeds of up to 20fps with the Sony a9, and up to 10fps with a7R III and a7 III cameras. This lens has a remarkably light weight of 6.71 lbs, and features a special design that balances the weight distribution of the lens in order to eliminate the "front-heavy" nature that most lenses of this size have. Its innovative optical design features a large XA (Extreme Aspherical) element, as well as three fluorite elements, and one glass ED element to assist with suppressing common aberrations, as well as to resist flare and ghosting. The lens' physical construction is made of durable yet lightweight magnesium. This design benefits more precise panning when shooting, whether it be handheld or with a monopod.
Two XD (Extreme Dynamic) Linear Motors are featured for fast, precise, and quiet auto focus in order to provide you with reliable AF tracking. This feature is especially great for wildlife and sports photographers. A new algorithm has also been developed with these motors, in order to minimize the lag and instability which can occur when driving a large aperture focus lens group.
All of the lenses from the "G Master" series are designed to make sure that outstanding contrast is maintained at high spatial frequencies. Color bleeding is suppressed to provide a clear reproduction, with sharp and fine subject details. Also included, is Sony's Nano AR coating to suppress any unwanted glare, reflections, or ghosting.
The FE 600mm f/4.0 GM OSS Lens features a wide maximum aperture of f/4.0, which maintains exposure, as well as depth of field while shooting in various light conditions. It also has the ability to produce an out-of-focus background, or "bokeh", which can be enhanced by the lens' 11-blade aperture ring. The Sony G Master series is able to eliminate the common issue of polygonal shaped, defocused points of light, via its unique design which allows more natural/smoother defocusing to be achieved.
Sony's high-performance Optical SteadyShot image stabilization is built-in to the FE 600mm f/4.0 create blur-free images, with great sharpness (even with handheld shooting). When the lens is used with a sony a series camera, 5-axis image stabilization becomes available with the lens. Focus Hold buttons are featured in four locations on the lens for easy access. By just pressing one of the focus hold buttons, you can lock your focusing distance. These buttons can also be assigned to different functions in your camera body menu. The FE 600mm f/4.0 features maximum resistance against dust and moisture, making it suitable for outdoor shooting.
Optical teleconverters (1.4x/2.0x) are supported, which allows a focal length of up to 1200mm to be achieved (1800mm Equivalent on APS-C Bodies). Imaging performance, as well as AF performance are both maintained during the use of one of the compatible teleconverters. Maximum aperture with the 1.4x (approx.) is f/5.6, and with the 2.0x (approx.) f/8.0.
An AF/MF Switch is provided on the lens, to allow a quick switch between auto and manual focusing. Full Time DMF (Direct Manual Focus) provides you with the ability to quickly switch to manual mode when shooting in autofocus mode. When the DMF switch is on, the lens will switch to manual focus by rotating the focus ring. Linear Response MF is available for fine/responsive manual control. The Focus Range Limiter switch allows for a limited focus range to be selected (3 Settings to Choose From).
A Drop-In filter slot is featured, allowing the use of 40.5mm filters. When using a circular polarizing filter, it can be rotated to reach your desired polarization.
For increased mount strength, the FE 600mm f/4.0 uses seven mount attachment screws to ensure the ability to withstand professional use. A tripod collar ring is also included in the lens design for smooth rotation.
A Function Ring is included in the lens design and contains three main settings (PRESET, FUNCTION, OFF).
A trunk-style hard lens case is included to protect the lens from vibration or shock during transport. The case also comes with two carrying handles, as well as a carrying strap.
