Sony FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS Lens (Sony E)

Two Sony E-mount primes for wildlife and sports

The Sony FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS Lens (Sony E) is a full-frame super-telephoto prime for photographing distant subjects, particularly wildlife and sports. Its main combination is straightforward: a 600mm focal length, built-in optical stabilization and a weight of 995 g. This is a fixed-focal-length lens, so changing the framing means changing camera position rather than turning a zoom ring.

The Sony FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS Lens (Sony E) is the second prime in this launch. It offers a wider view than the 600mm and a brighter f/4.5 maximum aperture. The choice is primarily about working distance and light, not weight: Sony lists the 400mm at 994 g.

600mm reach, f/6.3 aperture and G Master optics

The 600mm has a maximum aperture of f/6.3 and stops down to f/20. That long focal length helps fill the frame with subjects that cannot be approached closely. The aperture still needs attention: keeping a fast shutter speed in dim light can require a higher ISO, especially with moving animals or athletes. Stabilization does not change that exposure requirement.

Sony lists an optical design of 24 elements in 17 groups, including Super ED glass, plus Nano AR Coating II. The glass addresses chromatic aberration, while the coating helps suppress flare and ghosting. Those are relevant concerns with outdoor subjects against bright skies or backlighting.

The diaphragm uses 11 rounded blades to help keep out-of-focus highlights rounded as the aperture closes. The filter size is 95mm, a practical number to check before choosing screw-in filters.

A 995 g lens with Optical SteadyShot

The 600mm measures 108 mm in diameter and 263 mm long, with a listed weight of 995 g, or 2.2 lb. Those dimensions are useful for planning bag space; the weight is the lens alone, not the complete camera setup. A long lens still needs steady handling, even when its weight is manageable.

Built-in Optical SteadyShot reduces the effect of camera shake. That helps when working handheld, where small movements become more noticeable at long focal lengths. It does not freeze subject motion. A running player or a bird in flight still calls for a shutter speed appropriate to that movement.

Sony also lists weather-sealed, dust- and moisture-resistant construction for the 600mm. That is a relevant feature for a lens intended for outdoor sports and wildlife photography, where conditions are not always tidy.

Autofocus tracking and on-lens controls

The 600mm uses two XD Linear Motors for autofocus. Sony lists continuous AF/AE tracking support up to 120 fps. That figure concerns the lens's ability to support focus and exposure tracking during rapid shooting; it does not mean every attached camera will capture images at 120 fps.

For moving subjects, tracking support matters because focus has to keep changing as the subject approaches or moves away. The specification is more useful for that kind of burst shooting than for a stationary subject, where repeated focus updates are less demanding.

On-lens controls include a customizable function ring and four focus-hold buttons. The rotating tripod collar allows switching between horizontal and vertical framing while the lens remains supported. That gives tripod users a way to change orientation without repositioning the entire support setup.

Where the 400mm F4.5 fits

The 400mm is 242 mm long and weighs 994 g. Its shorter focal length gives more room around a subject from the same camera position, which can help when 600mm would frame too tightly. Its f/4.5 maximum aperture also admits more light for exposure than f/6.3, allowing more flexibility with shutter speed or ISO under the same lighting.

Sony specifies two XD Linear Motors and Optical SteadyShot with selectable modes. The optical features include Super ED and ED glass, Nano AR Coating II and an 11-blade circular aperture. Dust- and moisture-resistant construction is joined by a fluorine coating on the front element.

The 400mm also supports optional 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters, with Sony listing reach up to 800mm. That gives it an additional route to tighter framing beyond its native 400mm focal length.

Sony E-mount prices and availability

Both options are individual Sony E-mount lenses. Their availability differs: the 600mm is available to preorder, while the 400mm is in stock. The 600mm puts the longer native focal length first; the 400mm offers the brighter maximum aperture at a lower price.
