Overview
The Sony Alpha a9 II Mirrorless Digital Camera (Body Only) features a 24.2 Megapixel full-frame Exmor RS BSI stacked CMOS sensor, like that of its predecessor (Alpha a9), with an updated BIONZ X processor, & provides especially fast & responsive capabilities. The Alpha a9 II features up to 20fps shooting, with a silent electronic shutter, & up to 10fps with a mechanical shutter, as well as a wide sensitivity range that reaches an expanded ISO 204800. The sensor also features a 693-point phase-detection autofocus system, with intelligent subject tracking, & real-time Eye AF, to guarantee precise focus on moving subjects. UHD 4K video recording is supported at up to 30fps on the Alpha a9 II, & Quick and Slow Motion recording is available for more creative possibilities. Its 5-Axis SteadyShot "INSIDE" image stabilization is featured to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to 5.5 stops, for a better handheld-shooting experience. A dramatic update in its physical design, includes a more ergonomic body, improved connectivity, & refined weather-sealing.
Optics & Focus
Optics:
The Sony Alpha a9 II features a Quad-VGA OLED Tru-Finder EVF, with a 3.69m-dot resolution, & 0.78x magnification, to provide bright & clear viewing, with rich detail. This Sony E-Mount camera also features a magnesium alloy chassis, which ensures durability, ridgity, & stability during your shoot. The mount is also designed to support heavier lenses with more comfort.
Focus:
The Fast Hybrid AF System that is featured on the Alpha a9 II covers 93% of your image area, & incorporates 693 phase-detection points, as well as 425 contrast-detection areas, for fast & precise focusing in a variety of lighting conditions, & supports sensitivity down to -3 EV. High-Density Tracking AF Technology is also featured, due to the density of focusing points, & is designed to track moving subjects in a variety of lighting conditions.
A number of focusing functions are included for refined accuracy, including Lock-On AF, which maintains focus on moving subjects, throughout the use of a configurable frame, that is set over your subject, & the color of your focus frame can be chosen to be either white, or red. An "Expand Flexible Spot" function employs surrounding focus points, in order to maintain focus on moving subjects (even if the originally selected point loses focus). AF tracking is even possible with apertures that are narrower than f/16, with select lenses, when working in Focus Priority Mode.
Eye AF can be used to maintain focus during portraiture, & is available in both AF-S & AF-C modes, for both stills & video applications. Autofocus can also be used with the "Focus Magnifier" function, for critical focus on detailed subjects. The rear touch-screen can be used for Touch Focus control, & a "Touchpad Focus Control Mode" is featured to use the rear screen to focus, while still keeping your eye to the viewfinder.
In AF-C mode, the focus point can be adjusted while the shutter button is half-pressed, providing an easier way to quickly shift your focus, without losing sight of what is happening in the frame.
Sensor & Screen
Sensor:
The featured 24.2 Megapixel Exmor RS BSI Stacked CMOS Sensor & BIONZ X Image Processor were designed for speed, & provide an impressively fast & responsive performance. Continuous shooting at up to 20fps is supported through the use of an electronic shutter, & 10 fps shooting is supported with a mechanical shutter. The sensor's back-illuminated design allows for an extended ISO 204800 sensitivity range, with reduced noise for high-quality images in a variety of lighting conditions. Uncompressed files can be recorded in 14-bit for greater color fidelity & more flexibility in post-production.
Screen:
A 3.0" (1.44m-dot), tiltable, rear LCD monitor is featured on the Alpha a9 II, & features a touch-panel design, to provide even more control over operation & focusing control. Its tilting feature assists with your ability to work from high & low angles.
Image & Video
Image:
The Alpha a9 II features a BIONZ X Processor, which works with a high-speed front-end LSI, to provide faster processing times, with a wide dynamic range & smooth tonal rendering. Its fast recording capabilities are complimented by an equally fast AF/AE metering system, which functions at 60x per second, to continuously evaluate, & track/lock onto moving subjects. Automatic anti-flicker shooting recognizes & times your shutter action, to minimize the flicker-effect, for more consistency in your images. The use of an electronic shutter enables complete blackout-free monitoring, with the electronic viewfinder, for more accurate rendering of moving subjects.
5-Axis SteadyShot "INSIDE" Image Stabilization is incorporated, & compensates for five different types of camera shake, encountered during handheld shooting, for both stills & video applications. This enables you to use any compatible lens, even with a lens adapter, & feel confident about not encountering blur from camera-shake.
Video:
The Sony Alpha a9 II supports internal recording of UHD 4K movies, in multiple frame rates, up to 30fps. The Super35mm recording area, & effective 6K resolution, enable oversampling, which provides greater detail & full-pixel readout (without pixel binning) for higher quality imagery, with reduced moire & alaising.
Full-Frame 4K recording has greatly improved for higher quality, when working at mid to high sensitivities, to enable full use of the entire width of the sensor. Full HD1080p recording is also supported in frame rates up to 120fps, & both resolutions use the 100 MB/s XAVC format, contained within an MP4 wrapper, with 4:2:2 sampling. 4K video recording also enables the ability to produce 8 Megapixel stills during playback of video footage, by taking a frame grab, & storing it as a separate file.
