I have a Sony Alpha 100 and an M42 adapter. Which lenses can I use on this camera, and are there any limitations when using M42 lenses?

The Sony A100 will work natively with all Sony A-mount lenses, as well as the older Minolta AF lenses (some of which are excellent).
As for m42 lenses, there are tons of those, from various manufacturers. Some are very nice and others are dogs. All will be manual focus of course, and the aperture you will have to control manually on the lens as well.

The Sony Alpha 100 uses the Sony/Minolta A-mount. It works natively with Sony A-mount lenses and older Minolta AF A-mount lenses.
If you use an M42 adapter, you can also mount many M42 screw-mount lenses from various brands. However, these lenses are typically fully manual on the A100: you’ll need to focus manually, and in most cases set the aperture manually on the lens as well.
So in short:
- Native compatibility: Sony A-mount lenses
- Also compatible: Minolta AF A-mount lenses
- With your adapter: M42 screw-mount lenses, but with manual focus and manual aperture control
