As part of Sony’s flagship G Master lineup, this lens is engineered to deliver outstanding resolution, smooth bokeh, and reliable performance across the entire zoom range. The constant f/4.5 aperture provides improved low-light capability and greater depth-of-field control compared to variable-aperture alternatives, while still maintaining a relatively lightweight and portable design.

An advanced optical layout featuring ED XA, XA, Super ED, and ED elements minimizes aberrations and distortion while preserving sharp detail and natural rendering, even in challenging backlit scenes. Nano AR Coating II further reduces flare and ghosting for strong contrast and vibrant color accuracy in difficult lighting conditions. A floating focus system helps maintain consistent image quality from infinity down to the minimum focusing distance, while the rounded 11-blade diaphragm produces smooth, natural-looking background blur.

Fast Autofocus and Advanced Stabilization

Optimized for speed and precision, the lens uses four XD Linear motors to deliver rapid, responsive, and nearly silent autofocus performance suitable for both photography and video. The AF system supports continuous shooting speeds up to 120 fps and high-frame-rate video recording up to 240 fps, with significantly improved tracking performance and subject recognition compared to previous generations.

Internal focusing contributes to faster AF response while preserving the lens’s physical length during operation. Focus breathing has also been minimized for more natural cinematic transitions, and compatibility with Breathing Compensation on select Sony cameras further reduces changes in angle of view while focusing.

Sony’s Optical SteadyShot image stabilization system helps maintain sharp handheld images even at extreme focal lengths, with dedicated stabilization settings for standard shooting, panning, and moving subjects.

Designed for Hybrid Creators

Despite its extensive focal range and bright aperture, the lens remains highly manageable for handheld operation thanks to its balanced weight distribution. A manual aperture ring provides direct exposure control and can be de-clicked for smooth, silent iris adjustments during video recording or locked into the “A” position for camera-controlled aperture changes.

The lens also supports close-up shooting with up to 0.25x magnification and a minimum focusing distance as short as 2.1 feet, adding flexibility for detail work and near-macro applications.

Teleconverter Compatibility

For even greater reach, the FE 100-400mm f/4.5 GM OSS is compatible with Sony’s optional 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters while retaining full autofocus and auto-exposure functionality. With teleconverters attached, the lens can achieve effective focal lengths of 140-560mm f/6.3 or 200-800mm f/9, making it an even more versatile tool for long-distance photography.
