Is aperture-click noise on startup/shutdown normal with a Sigma 100-400mm on a Sony A6500?

I’m using a Sigma 100-400mm lens on a Sony A6500. When the camera powers on or off, I can hear the lens aperture mechanism moving/clicking. Is this normal behavior, and is there any setting to reduce these aperture actuations to minimize wear?

Yes. That is to be expected. I cannot find the noise to be exceptional in any way. Any tap on the focus button, or any release would pretty much do the same.
Note that the focus and aperture behavior on many Sony cams differ from AF-C to AF-S. AF-S always opens up the aperture and then steps down to the set aperture to make AF in low light more precise. While AF-C keeps the aperture set to the target aperture. So you could influence the amount of aperture actuations a bit - but on the other hand, the lens is built to work on the aperture. Usually the shutter of your camera will die long before the aperture actuators do.

Yes — this is generally normal. The sound is usually the lens aperture being actuated, and similar movement can also happen when focusing or half-pressing the shutter.
On many Sony cameras, aperture behavior changes with focus mode:
- AF-S often opens the aperture for focusing, then stops it back down to the selected value.
- AF-C more often keeps the aperture closer to the working aperture.
So you may be able to slightly change how often you hear it by changing focus mode, but some aperture movement at power on/off and during operation is expected.
As for wear: this is what the lens is designed to do. Normal aperture actuation should not be a major concern, and in typical use the camera shutter is more likely to wear out before the lens aperture mechanism. There usually isn’t a setting to completely disable this behavior.
