Can a Canon EF 100-400mm lens with a failed autofocus motor be repaired?

My Canon EF 100-400mm lens still focuses manually, but autofocus now makes noise and won’t lock focus after being shaken during travel. It seems like the AF motor or focus mechanism may be damaged. Has anyone had a similar Canon lens repaired successfully, and is this usually something Canon service can fix? I haven’t taken it to a Canon repair center yet.

Yes—this type of autofocus failure is often repairable. If manual focus still works but AF makes noise and won’t focus, the problem could be the AF motor or part of the focus system, and Canon service can typically inspect, replace faulty parts, then recalibrate and test the lens.
One community report described a similar Canon lens repair that included focus-system work, part replacement, relubrication, recalibration, and cleaning, after which the lens worked like new.
The main question is usually cost versus value. If the lens is still under warranty and there’s no obvious impact damage, it’s worth checking warranty coverage first. If there is visible damage or the issue was caused by impact/shock, warranty coverage may be unlikely.
Best next step: take or send the lens to an authorized Canon repair center for an estimate. They can confirm whether it’s the motor or another AF component and tell you whether repair is worthwhile.
