Will a professionally repaired lens perform like new after impact damage?

My Canon EF-S 15-85mm was dropped and the lens barrel is visibly bent. Autofocus no longer works and the manual focus ring is stiff. I plan to send it to Canon for evaluation.
In general, when a lens is professionally repaired after this kind of impact, can it usually be restored to normal optical and mechanical performance, or is some loss in image quality or reliability common even after repair? Also, is it reasonable to compare the repair cost against replacement if the estimate is high?

I've had two lenses repaired. 10-22 which was obliterated by a skier on a half-pipe (it ended up looking very much like your lens) and a 50 f/1.4 which I dropped onto concrete. Both of which came back optically as good as before they were damaged, as far as I can detect. The 10-22 does however have a ski mark down the side which will probably reduce the value if I ever sell it!
This is the last photo I got before impact!

In many cases, yes: a professional repair can restore a damaged lens to normal performance. From the experiences shared, multiple Canon lenses that suffered serious impact damage were repaired and came back with no noticeable loss in image quality or build quality. One user described the repair quality as first-rate, and another said the lens was optically as good as before.
That said, the key factor is the repair estimate. With impact damage like a bent barrel, failed autofocus, and stiff manual focus, internal parts may need replacement, not just realignment. A reputable service center should provide a firm quote before proceeding.
So the practical approach is:
- Send it to an authorized repair center.
- Get the estimate first.
- Compare repair cost against the cost of replacing the lens.
A repaired lens does not necessarily suffer ongoing image-quality degradation if the repair is done properly, though obvious cosmetic marks could affect resale value.
