The integrated fixed lens structure optimizes image quality from the premium ZEISS® Sonnar T* 35mm F2 lens and the advanced full-frame 61-megapixel Exmor R™ back-illuminated CMOS image sensor while keeping the size ultra-compact. The lens and imaging plane positions are precisely adjusted at the micron level to maximize the sensor's high resolution, and along with the latest BIONZ XR™ image processing engine deliver stunning optical and imaging performance.
High resolution, high sensitivity, low noise, and a wide dynamic range is achieved through the back-illuminated sensor's noise reduction, gapless on-chip lenses, anti-reflection optical coating, elimination of the optical low-pass filter that is usually positioned in front of the sensor and other original technologies from Sony.
The latest BIONZ XR image processing engine delivers the full potential of the image sensor, rendering details with natural gradations and textures with realistic color, low noise and superior image quality. Processing is remarkably fast boosting still image and movie processing power while maintaining stress-free instant menu response regardless of the real-time processing load.
The integrated fixed-lens configuration of the exceptional ZEISS® Sonnar T* 35mm F2 lens has been meticulously designed to achieve the full optical performance potential of the camera through optimization of the positioning of the lens and its focal plane at the micron level. It delivers exceptional image quality, offering remarkable brightness and impressively sharp images from the center to the corners thanks to advanced aspherical lens elements, T* coating and nine aperture blades that produce beautiful background bokeh.
The ability to move in close and capture minute details offers greatly expanded creative possibilities. The macro ring on the lens barrel allows quick switching between normal and macro modes with a minimum focus distance of just 20 cm and 0.26x maximum magnification for impressive close-up and macro performance.
Enjoy various expressions with different focal lengths as if carrying three different lenses. The Step Crop Shooting function allows you to get closer to the subject without stepping forward by switching between 35mm (60 MP), 50mm (29 MP), and 70mm (15 MP) equivalents with a simple one-touch operation. Even when you can’t approach the subject, you can shoot up to 70mm equivalent while maintaining a high resolution of 15 MP.
Sony’s latest high speed image processing engine and AE algorithm make it possible to detect facial skin areas and automatically adjust exposure for optimum brightness and tone, even when the face is backlight, in strong direct sunlight, or facing sideways away from the camera. The advanced algorithm not only ensures excellent skin tones, but also reproduces the natural colors of the sky and foliage with lifelike fidelity.
Twelve Creative Look presets are provided, including three film-style looks (FL, FL2 and FL3) and can either be used as they are or customized via eight adjustable parameters. The presets provide a wide range of variations with different combinations of color, color depth, brightness, contrast, and sharpness. The effect of the eight adjustable parameters, including contrast, saturation, shadow and others, can be viewed in real time on the camera display. Customized Creative Looks can also be stored for later recall and use.
The high-performance backside-illuminated image sensor in the RX1R III offers a powerful combination of Sony’s most advanced technologies, featuring outstanding light-gathering efficiency. It offers a standard ISO range of 100-32,000 for both stills and movies, expandable to ISO 102,400 for stills. Dynamic range at lower sensitivities is an impressive 15 stops that translates to smooth, natural gradations from highlights to shadows.
The upgraded and more reliable AI-based Real-time Tracking makes shooting in a wider range of situations simpler, leaving you free to concentrate on framing and composition. The RX1R III can even track people wearing helmets or track animals facing away from the camera.
The AI processing unit supports focus tracking recognition of a wide range of subjects including Human, Animal, Bird, Insect, Car/Train, and Airplane. The same wide-ranging subject recognition is provided for stills and movies, and an [Auto] mode simplifies operation by allowing the camera to automatically select the subject type. The [Auto] mode reliably takes care of subject selection in most cases, leaving the user free to concentrate on composition and shooting.
The RX1R III performs human pose estimation using the innovative AI processing unit. Learned human forms and postures help to recognize not just eyes, but body and head position with high precision. This makes it possible to accurately lock onto and track a wide range of subjects, even if they are facing away from the camera or wearing sunglasses or a helmet, for example.
If the subject cannot be recognized or subject recognition AF (autofocus) is not turned ON, Sony’s original subject recognition algorithm will process color, pattern, and spatial data to reliably acquire and track the subject. If [Touch Tracking] is engaged, touching a subject on the monitor selects it for tracking. A custom button assigned to [Tracking On] allows a selected subject to be temporarily tracked regardless of the focus area setting.
The high speed BIONZ XR processing engine and the latest processing algorithms result in significantly improved AF (autofocus) performance. 693 phase-detection points in a high-density focal plane phase-detection AF system cover approximately 78% of the image area when shooting stills. Accurate focus is achieved even when the subject only fills a small area of the frame. Sony’s Fast Hybrid AF system combines the speed and tracking capabilities of phase-detection AF with the precision of contrast AF.
Autofocus in challenging low-light conditions. The latest AF algorithms achieve high AF precision down to light levels as low as EV-4.0 in AF-S mode (ISO 100 equivalent). AF is precise and dependable even in low light.
Video can be recorded in 4K resolution up to 30p frame rate, or at a high frame rate of up to 120p in Full HD. Active Mode image stabilization provides shooting stability, and the S-Cinetone™ picture profile is available to give a cinematic look.
With a compact body that fits in the palm of your hand at approx. 113.3 x 67.9 x 87.5 mm (approx. 4.5 x 2.75 x 3.5 inches) and weighing only 498 g (approx. 1.1 lb), the RX1R III is highly mobile and ready to be taken anywhere, to shoot whatever and whenever the mood takes you.
The compact RX1R III runs off an NP-FW50 rechargeable battery pack, capturing up to 300 images on a single charge. It also has a USB Type-C® connector that supports USB Power Delivery (PD) for fast charging from a compatible PD power supply. Even though the NP-FW50 rechargeable internal battery pack provides ample capacity for most applications, an external mobile battery can be connected to power the RX1R III for extended shooting sessions.
