The Canon AE-1 SLR was the first camera equipped with a microprocessor to control the exposure metering. This camera comes with the Canon FD 50mm f/1.8 S.C lens. It also accepts other Canon FD mount lenses. The camera has a shutter-priority based exposure mode that is employed by a center-weighted TTL metering with a silicon photocell. You can adjust the ISO range from ASA 25 to 3200 and shutter speed up to 1/1000th of a second. Stopped-down the lens by pushing the dedicated lever. The hot shoe contact can be used to mount an electronic flash or flashbulb to the camera. The Canon AE-1 SLR camera has other notable features like exposure correction, self-timer, battery check and multi-take up spool.

Focus and Optics

The Canon AE-1 SLR has a Canon FD 50mm f/1.8 SC lens provided with it. This prime lens has an optical construction of 6 elements in 5 groups. The elements have a spectra coating applied to them for suppressing reflections. The TTL center-weighted exposure metering is done through a silicon photocell. You can set the exposure mode to shutter-priority that adjusts the lens aperture by keeping the shutter speed fixed. The AE lock prevents overexposure created due to the bright background or foreground. You can take shots of moving objects with the maximum shutter speed of 1/1000th of a second.

Sensor and Screen

The SLR has a fixed eye-level pentaprism viewfinder that covers 93.5% of the vertical and 96% of the horizontal space. This viewfinder shows camera-related information such as aperture, metering needle, and a stopped-down metering index.

Image and Video

This camera works on 35mm film rolls to provide a picture size of 24mm×36mm. The film speed can be set between ASA 25 to 3200. You can use the single-stroke advance for winding the film. The lever has a 120° throw and a 30° stand-off angle. The frame counter automatically increments after each exposure. It resets to the initial count if the camera back is opened.

Other Features

The camera has a hot shoe that accepts both electronic flash and bulbs. After mounting the flash, you can synchronize the electronic flash up to 1/60th and bulb to 1/15th of a second. The self-timer can be used to set the shutter release delay for up to 10 seconds. You can cancel the self-timer by depressing the battery check. The camera's exposure metering functions on a single 6V silver oxide battery.
