Canon AE-1 Program aperture only stops down to f/4 during depth-of-field preview

My Canon AE-1 Program seemed to stop the lens down only to about f/4 when I used the depth-of-field preview, even when set to smaller apertures like f/22. I tested with two Canon FD 50mm f/1.8 lenses and saw the same behavior, so I thought the camera might have a weak aperture lever. It turns out I was testing it without the film advance lever cocked. Is this normal behavior on the AE-1 Program, and does it affect actual shooting?

All this testing I did without the camera film advance lever being cocked, as soon as I cocked it worked fine!

Yes — this is normal if the camera is not cocked. On the AE-1 Program, the aperture stop-down/DOF preview mechanism needs the camera to be cocked via the film advance lever. If you test depth-of-field preview without cocking it first, the lens may not stop down correctly and can appear stuck around a wider aperture such as f/4.

Since it worked normally once the advance lever was cocked, that indicates the camera is likely fine and this should not limit your aperture during actual shooting, as the camera is cocked when ready to make an exposure. In short: it was a testing/setup issue, not necessarily a fault with the body or lenses.
