OVERVIEW
Designed for wildlife, action, and sports photography, the Sony FE 100–400mm f/4.5–5.6 GM OSS Lens is a practical equipment for every professional photographer and videographer. Part of the G Master series of lenses from Sony, this telephoto lens is compatible with full-frame E-mount cameras. Its optics are made of 22 elements in 16 groups, including 2 ED elements and 1 Super ED element for reducing color fringing and controlling chromatic aberrations. Further, Sony’s nano AR coating on the lens keeps flares and ghosting at bay. The nine-blade, round diaphragm offers a pleasing bokeh effect. The Direct Drive SSM AF system allows quick, quiet, and precise focus on the desired scene. Use the Optical SteadyShot image-stabilization feature for minimizing camera shakes and shooting pictures with immense sharpness. As the lens has a dust- and moisture-proof construction, it can be safely used in inclement conditions. Moreover, the front lens has a fluorine coating that makes it easy to wipe off dust and grease.

I just picked up this FE 100-400 F5.6 GM today at the Fairfield NJ store. I took it home and spent a couple hours with it. This lens is extremely sharp, even fully extended at 400mm. No noticeable color fringing, or vignetting, at least in-camera. When I tested it in the store the auto focus was fast but that was in good light. I tested the auto focus again in my living room with only cloudy afternoon light coming through a window, around EV3. It still focused fast and reliably, and was able to maintain focus at mid speed on my A7iii as my cat ran around chasing a laser pointer. I took it outside and again was surprised at how sharp it was even fully open at F5.6 over the 100-400mm range. I did some research first and I’m very glad I bought the native Sony FE 100-400 rather than an adapted 150-600 lens, my other choice. The AF performance is well worth it and the 1.4x teleconverter gets me to 560mm at F8 if I really need the reach. I can’t wait to get some birds in flight and see how it performs at its limits. But my first impression is that it does exactly what it says on the tin, so another win for Sony. As always, Unique Photo’s in-store pricing was competitive with the online stores, and since I live within driving distance from their store I didn’t have to wait two days to get it delivered! Happy, happy.
