My Canon PowerShot SX20 IS has suddenly started showing the message "Lens Error, Restart Camera." What basic troubleshooting steps are worth trying, and when does this usually mean the camera needs service or replacement?

Oh boy. That error happened to me on a Powershot SX100 is some weeks ago. I visited several web sites like this one but wasn't able to fix it by myself, so I ended up buying the same camera you have (was also an excuse to buy a new one), and pray it doesn't happen again.

This error usually points to a lens mechanism problem, often something the user can’t fully repair.

A few basic things are worth trying:

  • Remove the main battery.
  • If the camera has a small backup/watch battery, remove that too.
  • Leave the camera powered down for about an hour.
  • Reinstall the backup battery first (if present), then the main battery, and restart the camera.
  • Check that the lens area is as clean as possible and free of obvious dirt or obstruction.

If the camera is still under warranty, the safest recommendation is to return it or send it for service. Based on the community experience here, there does not appear to be a reliable at-home fix if the error keeps coming back.

So: try a full power reset and basic cleaning/inspection first; if that doesn’t help, warranty service or repair/replacement is the likely next step.
