Canon PowerShot SX260 HS dropped and now shows “Lens Error”

I dropped my Canon PowerShot SX260 HS while the lens was extended. After that, the camera starts up, makes an unusual sound, beeps, and then shows this message: “Lens Error. Will shut down automatically. Restart camera.” I already removed and reinserted the battery and SD card, and my photos are still fine, but the camera won’t work normally. Is there anything I can do, or does this usually mean the camera needs repair or replacement?

The camera is broken. Professional repair is almost certainly more expensive than the cost of replacement with a used camera with similar capabilities. Professional repair is probably even more expensive than replacement with a new camera of similar ergonomics.
It may be possible to repair the camera yourself depending on your tools, capabilities, and the nature of the damage. And there is not much to lose since the camera is broken.
However replacement will get you back making pictures again. Cameras break if they are used. It doesn’t make anyone happy when it happens. But nearly all cameras are replaceable and the important part is the pictures not the tool that made them.

A drop with the lens extended commonly means the lens mechanism has been damaged or jammed. On a compact camera like the SX260 HS, that error usually indicates a hardware failure rather than a settings or card issue.
Since removing the battery and SD card didn’t fix it, the camera is most likely broken. Professional repair is often not economical for this type of compact camera and may cost as much as, or more than, replacing it with a used or similar camera.
If you’re technically confident, a DIY repair might be possible, but only if you’re comfortable opening the camera and accepting the risk—there’s usually not much to lose once the lens assembly is damaged. Otherwise, replacement is the practical option.
