Dropped Canon PowerShot SX70 HS; lens is bent, stuck extended, and clicks

I dropped my Canon PowerShot SX70 HS while the lens was fully extended. The lens is now bent and will not retract. When I turn the camera on, it tries to move the lens, makes a clicking sound, and then shuts down. I also can’t push the lens back into place by hand. Is this likely repairable, or is the camera effectively done for?

Since this camera is still in production you have a good chance of repairing it below the cost of replacing it in a Canon-authorized service.

This sounds like physical damage to the lens mechanism. If the lens is bent, won’t retract, and the camera clicks before shutting down, the camera is likely protecting itself after the lens fails to move correctly.

Based on the community response, it may still be worth repairing rather than replacing, especially since the PowerShot SX70 HS is still a current model. Your best option is to have it evaluated by a Canon-authorized service center, where there’s a reasonable chance the repair cost could be less than buying a new camera.

Avoid trying to force the lens back in by hand, as that can cause more damage.
