Canon PowerShot A810 shows “Lens Error” when retracting or zooming

My Canon PowerShot A810 extends the lens normally when powered on, but when I turn it off the lens does not fully retract, makes a buzzing sound, and then shows “Lens Error.” If I manually push the lens in after shutdown, the error clears. I also get the same error when trying to zoom. Is this repairable, or is there a practical fix?

I'm afraid the answer here is the same as it is for any other fault on a 10 year old compact camera: it's not economically viable to fix. If you particularly like the A810, you can pick another one up on eBay relatively cheaply.

This behavior points to a mechanical lens fault in the zoom/retraction mechanism. On an older compact camera like the Canon PowerShot A810, a lens error during retracting and zooming usually means the lens assembly is sticking or failing rather than a simple setting issue.

Based on the community answer, the practical advice is that repair is usually not economically worthwhile on a camera of this age. The cost and effort of servicing the lens mechanism typically exceed the value of the camera.

If you really like this model, the most sensible option is usually to replace it with another used A810 or move to a newer compact camera. Avoid forcing the lens by hand, as that can cause further damage.
