Canon PowerShot SX220 HS shows "Lens error" after the lens was pushed in

My Canon PowerShot SX220 HS worked fine until the lens was accidentally pushed while it was fully extended. Since then, the lens only retracts to the normal wide position, and the camera shows the message: "Lens error, shut down automatically, restart camera." On the next power-up, the lens extends slightly, then the same error appears again. I can also hear something rattling inside when I shake the camera. Is this likely repairable, or does the lens mechanism need replacement?

From your description, it appears your baby broke some relatively delicate part in the lens mechanism -- possibly a gear tooth or sensor part. Given there is no practical or cost-effective option to repair cameras in this class (a repair would cost as much as replacement due to the cost of skilled labor), the only suggestion I can make is to take the Powershot out of service and replace it.

It appears this Powershot model is still offered, and you may also be able to get a good working one for less on eBay or from a used equipment dealer such as KEH.

This sounds like physical damage to the lens mechanism, likely from the lens being forced while extended. On compact cameras like the PowerShot SX220 HS, that often means a damaged gear, guide, or position sensor inside the zoom assembly.

Because these parts are delicate and labor-intensive to replace, repair is usually not practical or cost-effective on a camera of this type. The rattling noise also suggests something internal may have come loose or broken.

In short: this is most likely a hardware failure, not a setting or simple jam you can fix at home. The usual recommendation is to retire the camera and replace it, or look for a good used replacement body if you want the same model.
