How can I stop my Nikon D5200 from resetting image file numbers to DSC_0001?

On my Nikon D5200, if I copy photos off the memory card and then continue shooting, the next images sometimes start again at DSC_0001 instead of continuing the numbering. My older camera kept increasing the file number over time. Is there a setting on the D5200 that keeps file numbers sequential even after images are removed or the card is reformatted?

Page 162 in the manual. Go to the Custom Settings menu and change option d4, "File Number Sequence", to On.
When this option is off, filenames are reset when you change exposure or reformat the card. With it on, they continue where you left off. An option to reset the count is also available in the same menu.

Yes. On the Nikon D5200, enable Custom Settings menu > d4 > File Number Sequence > On.
With File Number Sequence turned on, the camera continues numbering from the last file number used instead of restarting at DSC_0001 when images are deleted or the card is reformatted. If this setting is Off, the camera may reset numbering in those situations.
There is also a reset option in the same menu if you ever want to start numbering over manually.
