How can I stop my Nikon D3100 from resetting image file numbers?

On my Nikon D3100, after I transfer photos to my computer, new image file numbers seem to start over from zero again. I’d like the numbering to continue from the previous sequence, especially when shooting the same event across multiple card downloads. Is there a camera setting to keep file numbering continuous?

Go to the Setup Menu (The one with the wrench icon) and set File Number Sequence to ON.

Yes. On the Nikon D3100, open the Setup Menu (wrench icon) and set File Number Sequence to On. That keeps image numbering continuous instead of restarting after transfers or card changes in typical use.
