How can I stop my Nikon D5300 from resetting file numbers to DSC_0001?

On my Nikon D5300, if I copy photos off the memory card and then keep shooting, the camera starts naming new files from DSC_0001 again. I’d like the file numbers to continue from the last image taken instead of restarting after the card is emptied. Is there a setting that keeps file numbering continuous?

Yes. On the Nikon D5300, turn on File Number Sequence.
Go to: Menu > Custom Settings > d4: File Number Sequence > On
With this enabled, the camera continues numbering new files from the last used number instead of restarting at DSC_0001 when images are removed from the card.
