Why did my Nikon D810 restart image numbering, and how do I keep file numbers sequential?

I shot images on my Nikon D810 up to around DSC7042–DSC7107, removed the SD card to download some files, then put the same card back in without reformatting or changing any settings. After that, the camera started numbering new photos around DSC0361 instead of continuing from the previous sequence.

What causes this on the D810, and how can I restore and prevent image file numbering from resetting in the future?

Take a look at this question at Nikon.

It talks about Custom Settings Menu d6:

By default sequential numbering is set to "OFF"

Sequential file numbering OFF - When a new card is inserted the current folder and file numbers are not continued, file numbering starts again in a new folder.

Sequential file numbering ON - When a new card is inserted the camera can continue numbering files in sequence from the last file number on the previous card.

This is usually caused by the D810’s sequential file numbering setting. On Nikon bodies, Custom Settings Menu d6 controls whether file numbers continue across cards/folders.

If sequential numbering is OFF, the camera may start again in a new folder rather than continuing from the last image number. If it’s ON, the camera will continue numbering from the last file number it recognizes.

To prevent this happening again, check Custom Settings Menu d6 and set sequential file numbering to ON.

If numbering has already reset, turning sequential numbering back on should let the camera continue properly from the next recognized number going forward. Keep in mind that Nikon file numbering and folder behavior are linked, so inserting cards and how the camera reads existing files can affect the result.

In short: verify d6 is set to ON, and leave it enabled if you want continuous numbering.
