Can I quickly stop a Canon 430EX from firing on an EOS 450D/XSi without powering it off?

I use a Canon EOS 450D/XSi with a Speedlite 430EX attached. Sometimes I want to take a single shot without flash, then resume using flash immediately afterward. Is there a quick way to disable the flash from firing without switching the Speedlite off? I’d prefer not to lose manual exposure control if possible.

430EX does not instantly discharge when you turn it off. Therefore if you do it just for a shot and then turn it back on, it'll still have almost full power and be ready in almost no time.

On the EOS 450D/XSi, there isn’t a practical camera-side setting to temporarily suppress a mounted 430EX while keeping your normal exposure mode. The camera does have a "flash off" scene mode, but that’s an automatic mode, so you lose direct control over settings like aperture and shutter speed.

Higher Canon bodies offer custom functions to stop the flash from firing, but the 450D does not. In practice, your main option is simply to switch the 430EX off for that shot and back on again. Since the flash capacitor does not instantly discharge when powered off, it should still be nearly ready when turned back on, so recovery is usually very quick.
