On the Canon EOS 450D (Rebel XSi), the "External flash control" menu is grayed out unless a compatible flash is connected. Can this camera adjust E-TTL flash output or A/B/C group ratios from the camera menu, and what kind of flash or trigger is required for that to work?

Page 117 of the XSi's manual says that the settings available are dependent on the flash and indicates to look at the documentation for the flash.

Generally speaking, the settings you are talking about can be controlled from the camera menus when using flashes that support them, but check the documentation of the flash you intend to use first.

Yes, but only with compatible hardware attached. On the 450D, the External Flash Control menu depends on the connected flash/transmitter, so it stays unavailable when nothing compatible is on the hot shoe.

The 450D itself does not have built-in wireless master flash control. To control off-camera Canon E-TTL flashes, you need an E-TTL-capable flash or transmitter connected to the hot shoe (directly, via cable, or via a compatible trigger). Canon’s older wireless system was optical, not built into the 450D.

Whether you can change flash output or group ratios from the camera menu depends on the specific flash. Canon models commonly controllable from the camera menu include the 600EX-RT, 580EX II, 430EX II, 320EX, 270EX II, and 90EX. Earlier models such as the 580EX, 550EX, and 430EX generally cannot be controlled through the camera menu.

So the answer is: the 450D can provide menu-based flash control only when the attached flash/transmitter supports it. Check the flash manual/specs to confirm support for camera-menu control and wireless ratio/group control.
