Overview

The Olympus PEN-F Micro Four Thirds Camera Body Only - Black is designed keeping the timeless aura of the original PEN-F Film camera in mind, but it comes packed with modern features and functionality. It is an interchangeable lens system SLR camera in the micro four-thirds format. The camera captures images at a maximum resolution of 5184 x 3888 pixels and records full HD 1080p videos at a frame rate of up to 60 fps. It also includes a 3-inch Vari-angle LCD monitor with touch control and a 20MP 4/3 Live MOS sensor.

Optics and Focus

The autofocus system of the PEN-F camera offers multiple modes including Single AF, Continuous AF with subject tracking, and manual focus. The AF system provides 800 selectable autofocus points and selectable magnification up to 14x for precise focusing capabilities. It also features a face and eye detection that can prioritize between either focusing on the nearest, the right, or the left eye. The PEN-F camera includes a 5-axis, sensor-shift image stabilization system that compensates for camera shakes. It works to counteract yaw, roll, pitch, vertical and horizontal motions to ensure images are always free of motion blur. Although the camera does not include a built-in flash, it comes with the FL-LM3 flash, which is dust proof and splash proof. The flash unit is ideal for bounce photography and offers an intensity control up to ±3 EV.

Sensor and Screen

With a 20MP 4/3 Live MOS sensor, the PEN-F camera offers CCD-equivalent image quality, but with lower energy consumption. As a result, it allows the camera to provide a live preview function to frame compositions easily. The chip of the LIVE MOS sensor is equipped with a noise-reduction technology to ensure excellent performance in low-light environments. The 3-inch Vari-angle 1037k-dot LCD touchscreen offers tilting capabilities to make shooting at low or high angles an easier task. The camera also includes an OLED viewfinder offering a 100% field of view with a display grid, 2-axis level gauge, and adaptive color temperature and brightness control.

Image and Video

The PEN-F camera captures breathtaking stills at a maximum resolution of 5184 x 3188 pixels. It uses 12-bit lossless RAW compression and saves photos in either JPEG, RAW, or MPO (3D still) formats. A High Res Shot mode further enhances the pixel count to capture images equivalent to 50 megapixels i.e. 8160 x 6120 (JPEG) and 10368 x 7776 (RAW). The PEN-F camera records videos in full HD at multiple frame rates with the maximum being 60 fps. It even offers time lapse modes and a super fast motion capture mode, which records videos at 120 fps. The camera saves videos in MPEG-4AVC and H.264 formats and provides a recording time of around 29 minutes.

It also offers TTL Image Sensor metering with multiple modes such as Digital ESP (324-area multi-pattern metering), center-weighted average metering, spot metering in AF target mode, spot metering with highlight control, and spot metering with shadow control. It includes a focal plane shutter with intervals ranging from 1/8000 to 60 seconds and an electronic shutter with intervals ranging from 1/16000 to 60 seconds in silent mode.
