After upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10, my Canon EOS 550D is no longer detected over USB. The camera worked before the upgrade and still works on the same computer when booted into Linux, so the hardware and cable seem fine. Canon says the camera should be detected automatically as a media device and should not need a separate driver. In Windows 10, the camera does not appear in Explorer and I get a message that the driver is missing. What could cause this, and how can I fix it?

The reason was that I am using Windows 10 N, which comes without the MTP driver. One has to install the Microsoft Media Feature Pack, in order to get this driver. Windows Update does not find it automatically. Moreover, for me it did not work out to install this version of the driver which is linked almost everywhere. Instead, I had to install the 1803 version of this download. The 1809 version did not work either.
