Why does Aperture’s Photos view show only some images, and how can I fix it?

In Apple Aperture, the built-in Photos section should normally show all images in the current library. In my case, the library contained around 15,000 photos, but the Photos view showed only 854. Those images seemed to match one face/smart album, even though no filters appeared to be active in the browser or library pane.
What causes this, and what’s the proper way to restore the full Photos view?

Answer is embarrassing:
Rebulding my library fixed it.
That feels a bit like calling tech support without restarting first, but perhaps my shame can help others.
If you don't know how, here's what you do:
- Open Aperture while holding down both Option and Command
- You'll see three choices (repair permissions, repair database, rebuild database), and should run them in order from top to bottom. After each one runs, Aperture will open. Close it, and open it again while holding both buttons to run the next one.
If you have other weird stuff, especially related to syncing, I also recommend picking all your pics (click "photos") and going to the Photos menu up top and selecting generate previews.

This is likely a library database issue rather than a normal filtering problem. The reported fix was to rebuild the Aperture library.

- Quit Aperture.
- Reopen it while holding Option + Command.
- In the repair dialog, run the maintenance tools in order:
