In Apple Photos, is it possible to see the location/map information for photos inside a Shared Album, or do the photos need to be imported into your library first?

Usually, no. In Apple Photos, Shared Albums generally do not provide the same location/map viewing features as photos in your main library. On iOS, Photos can show a location map for a regular album, but not for a Shared Album. On macOS, location data may be visible for items in the library, but not at the Shared Album level.
If the original photos were shared with location metadata included, that metadata may still exist on the individual items, depending on sharing settings, but Apple Photos does not typically let you visualize Shared Album locations as a map the way it does for library photos.
So if you need reliable location viewing or map-based browsing, you’ll generally need to import the photos into your own library first.

If location data was included for the published items (shared album) you should be able to see it... it's a preference option.
