Can Google Photos preserve folder structure as albums when uploading?

I like using Google Photos, but when I upload images from folders, everything gets mixed together in the main library instead of staying separated by folder or album. Is there any way to have uploads organized into albums based on the original folder structure, or do I need to create albums manually after upload?

I have faced the same issue and after only finding a single paid app that can do it, I have given up and written my own - http://jiotty-photos-uploader.yudichev.net/. It's free and open source.

Jiotty Photos Uploader is a simple desktop application for Windows, macOS and Linux that scans a folder, including all subfolders, for photos and videos, and uploads them to your Google Photos gallery arranging into albums according to the directory structure.

Google Photos does not normally preserve your computer folder structure as albums during upload. Uploaded images usually appear together in the main library, sorted by date or modification time.

Based on the answers here, your options are:

  1. Create albums manually after upload by selecting photos and adding them to a new album in Google Photos.
  2. Use a third-party uploader that scans folders and uploads photos into albums that match the directory structure. One community answer mentions an open-source tool called Jiotty Photos Uploader for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

So, if you want automatic folder-to-album organization, you’ll likely need an external tool. If you’ve already uploaded everything through Google Photos itself, you’ll probably need to sort them into albums manually.
