Why do my close-up photos suddenly look wide or distorted on my Sony Cyber-shot?

My close-up photos used to look normal, but now subjects appear wider or distorted. I’m using a Sony Cyber-shot and may have changed a setting by accident. I’ve checked the menus but can’t find the cause. What camera setting or shooting change could make close-ups look too wide, and how can I fix it?

Depending of the focal length of the lens e.g. 28mm, 55mm, 100mm etc. images can look distorted. As the sample below shows that an image taken with a wider angle lens with a same crop may look wider.

So a wide angle lens from a close range widens, while a longer does not.

The left is taken with a 28mm lens and the right with a 70mm lens.

I think the zoom factor of your sony cyber shot causes a close up might look wider. Perhaps you turned digital/software zoom on or off?

differences

Left is taken with a 28mm lens, the right with 80mm, the nose is clearly wider on the left

Try to take more distance and zoom in more to get the same crop.

This is usually caused by shooting close-ups at the wide-angle end of the zoom. When you are very close with a short focal length, features nearest the camera look enlarged, which makes the image seem “wide” or distorted. It’s not usually a defect—more often it’s a zoom/position change.

What to try:

  • Zoom in more instead of shooting at the widest setting.
  • Step back, then zoom in to keep the same framing.
  • Check whether a zoom setting was changed, including digital/software zoom.

In general, close subjects photographed from very close range with a wide lens will look broader, while a longer focal length from farther back gives a more natural look.
