Why doesn’t the exposure meter show in the Nikon D7000 viewfinder except in Manual mode?

On my Nikon D7000, I used to expect the exposure scale in the viewfinder (the - … | … + indicator), but now I only see it in Manual mode. I checked the menus and couldn’t find a setting for it. I also noticed it appears if I cover the lens. Is this normal behavior, or is something wrong with the camera?

Well I too own a Nikon D7000 and never saw the exposure indicator in any mode other than manual.I think it make sense too as if you are in Aperture Priority its the camera that adjust the correct exposure by picking the appropriate shutter speed same is in Shutter Priority.Hope this helps.

This is normal on the Nikon D7000.

In Manual mode, the exposure meter is shown all the time because you are setting both shutter speed and aperture, so the camera displays how far your settings are from the metered exposure.

In P, A, and S modes, the camera automatically adjusts exposure using the setting you didn’t choose, so the meter usually isn’t shown at 0. It typically appears only when:

  • you apply exposure compensation, or
  • the camera cannot achieve a correct exposure with the available settings/lens limits.

That also explains why you see it when you cover the lens: the camera detects extreme underexposure and shows the scale/warning.

So if you only see the indicator in Manual mode or in situations where exposure can’t be met, your camera is behaving as expected.
