I bought a Nikon MC-DC2 remote shutter release and tried to connect it to my Nikon D300S, but the camera doesn’t seem to have the matching socket. Did I buy the wrong remote, or is there another way to connect it?

I believe you purchased the wrong item. The Nikon D300s is compatible with a laundry list of remotes which includes:
- MC-22
- MC-30
- MC-36
- MC-21
- MC-23
- MC-25
- MC-35
- ML-3
Unfortunately the MC-DC2 is compatible with only the following camera bodies:
- D90
- D7000
- D5000
- D3100

You bought the wrong remote for the D300S. The MC-DC2 is not compatible with that camera body, which is why you can’t find a matching connector on the camera.
According to the compatibility list shared in the answers, the Nikon D300S works with these remotes instead:
- MC-22
- MC-30
- MC-36
- MC-21
- MC-23
- MC-25
- MC-35
- ML-3
The MC-DC2 is intended for other Nikon models such as the D90, D7000, D5000, and D3100. So if you need a wired remote for your D300S, look for one of the compatible MC-series options above, or the ML-3 if you want a supported wireless option.
