What inexpensive wireless remote options work well with the Nikon D300s?

I’m looking for a reliable, lower-cost remote release for a Nikon D300s. I used a simple wireless remote with a Nikon D50, but I’d prefer not to buy Nikon’s more expensive branded option for the D300s. Are there affordable third-party remotes that work well, and is RF generally better than infrared for this camera?

I found infrared remotes to be too slow for my taste, and bought a cheap YongNuo RF-602 sender/receiver pair (less than $50) for my nikon. It is not perfect, but way better than any infrared remote I ever owned: no need to point the remote to the cam, the delay is shorter, works over bigger distance.
I even bought extra cables so I can use it with any of my DSLR.

Oh, and it can be used to remote trigger your flash, too.

Yes. Based on the shared experiences, an inexpensive third-party RF remote is a better choice than a basic infrared remote for the D300s.

Recommended options mentioned:

  • YongNuo RF-602: inexpensive, reliable enough, longer range, less delay than infrared, and no need to point it at the camera. It can also trigger flashes.
  • Phottix Cleon II Wireless Remote N8: positively reviewed, better range and features than IR, and useful when you’re in the shot because it doesn’t require line of sight.
  • Hähnel wireless remote: a pricier option, but good if you want extra functions like timelapse and bulb-mode control.

In general, RF remotes are more convenient than IR because they don’t require line-of-sight and usually work from farther away with more consistent triggering. If you just want a simple, affordable remote release, the YongNuo or Phottix options sound like the best fit from the answers provided.
