Are third-party or wireless remote shutter releases safe to use with a Panasonic GF1?

I’m considering a remote shutter release for a Panasonic GF1. The Panasonic DMW-RSL1 is expensive, so I’m also looking at cheaper third-party options, including models with an intervalometer. Is there any real advantage to buying Panasonic’s own remote beyond compatibility? Also, are there wireless remote releases that work with the GF1’s connector?

The primary reason to go with the manufacturer's product is 100% compatibility. With 3rd party/other vendors, you need to be sure of the correct model (especially as the Panasonic supports a different, 4 pin connector - others use 2/3 pins IIRC).

There are quite a few which work though, and are marked compatible with the DMW-RSL1. If you're really in need of the better features of the studioHut, then check the compatibility and go ahead (I checked the site, and it looks like it will)

The main advantage of Panasonic’s own DMW-RSL1 is guaranteed compatibility. The GF1 uses Panasonic’s specific 4-pin remote connector, so with third-party remotes you need to confirm that the exact model is listed as compatible with the DMW-RSL1/GF1 connection. A generic remote with the wrong plug type may not work.

That said, third-party options can work fine if they are explicitly made for Panasonic’s remote interface. If you want extra features like an intervalometer, a compatible third-party remote is a reasonable choice.

Wireless options do exist as well. One community member reports good results using a Rainbow Imaging wireless remote on the GF1, including support for interval functions.

So: choose Panasonic if you want the safest compatibility; choose third-party if it is clearly Panasonic-compatible and offers features you want.
