Can a Nikon D5100 keep the shutter open while I hold the remote button?

I have a Nikon D5100 and an MC-DC2 remote. I want the shutter to stay open for as long as I hold the remote button, then close when I release it. Is this possible on the D5100, and if so, how do I set it?

This is called "Bulb Mode".
On most DSLRs (including the D5100), you would change to shutter priority or manual mode and slide the shutter speed larger until it reads "Bulb" or something of the sort.

Yes. What you’re looking for is Bulb mode.
On the Nikon D5100, switch to Manual or Shutter Priority mode, then adjust the shutter speed to the longest setting until it changes to “Bulb.” In Bulb mode, the shutter stays open while the release is held and closes when you let go.
Your MC-DC2 remote can be used to trigger this, which is useful for long exposures such as night photography or light trails. For best results, use a tripod to avoid camera shake.
