How do I update firmware on a Nikon COOLPIX S8000 when the camera only shows the current version?

I downloaded firmware version 1.1 for my Nikon COOLPIX S8000 and copied it to a newly formatted SD card, but when I open Firmware Version in the camera menu it only shows COOLPIX S8000 Ver.1.0 and gives me no update prompt. The camera does not go past that screen.
What is the correct procedure to get the firmware update screen? Do I need to extract or prepare the downloaded file in a specific way before copying it to the SD card?

The Nikon update involves downloading a .exe executable which you then run to create a folder containing a .bin file. This firmware folder containing the .bin file is then copied to the SD card. Have you followed those steps? See this link for detailed update information...
