How do I update firmware on a Nikon Coolpix B500 if the camera doesn't prompt me?

I'm trying to update the firmware on a Nikon Coolpix B500. I formatted a new memory card in the camera, copied the downloaded firmware files to the card, and reinserted it, but the camera never asks to start the update. I've tried copying both the extracted folder and just the .bin file. On a Mac, Disk Utility shows the card as FAT. When I open the camera's Firmware version menu, it only shows the currently installed version and no update option. What is the correct process, and what should I check if the update screen does not appear?

According to the Nikon instructions, after putting the firmware folder (created when you installed the downloaded dmg file) onto the memory card and turned the camera on-
Select Firmware version in the Set up menu and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the firmware update.

Generated from our catalog & community — verify before relying on it.
On the B500, the update is started from the camera menu, not by an automatic prompt. After preparing the card, turn the camera on and go to Set up > Firmware version, then follow the on-screen instructions.
A few key points:
- The memory card should be formatted in the camera first.
- Copy the firmware exactly as Nikon instructs after extracting the download.
- Then insert the card, power on the camera, and check Firmware version.
If that menu only shows the current version and gives no update option, the camera is not recognizing the firmware file. That usually means either the file/folder placement is not what the camera expects, or there may be an issue with that particular firmware/update process. Based on the shared experience, some users report seeing only the installed version with no selectable update item.
So the correct next step is to verify the file structure against Nikon’s instructions and then launch the update from Firmware version rather than waiting for a prompt.
