How do I install a Nikon camera firmware update from a downloaded ZIP file?

I downloaded a Nikon firmware update for my camera, but the file came as a ZIP archive. The camera does not recognize the ZIP file on the memory card. I already formatted the card in-camera, and I also tried formatting it on my computer as FAT, but that did not help. What is the correct way to install the firmware update?

When you right click on the zip file, is there an option to "extract" all files?

You need to unzip (extract the individual files contained within) the zip file first. Then you can copy the firmware file from the results of the extraction to the camera's memory card. There's probably also a "read me" file that explains the entire procedure contained within the zip file.

You do not copy the ZIP file itself to the memory card. First, extract/unzip the downloaded archive on your computer. Inside it should be the actual firmware file, and often a readme with Nikon’s step-by-step instructions.

Typical process:

  1. Download the firmware ZIP file.
  2. Extract/unzip it.
  3. Find the firmware file inside the extracted folder.
  4. Copy that firmware file to the memory card.
  5. Put the card in the camera and follow the camera’s firmware update menu/instructions.

Formatting the card in-camera is usually the right starting point. Reformatting the card on the computer usually is not necessary if the camera already formatted it correctly.

Most importantly, check the included readme file, because Nikon firmware packages normally include the exact procedure for that camera model.
