Why doesn’t my Nikon D700 show the firmware update option?

I have a Nikon D700 currently on firmware A 1.00 / B 1.00 and I’m trying to update to the newer firmware. I formatted a memory card, copied the downloaded firmware .bin file to the card, and inserted it into the camera. However, when I go to the Firmware version menu, the camera does not show an update option. What could prevent the D700 from recognizing the firmware update file?

OK. so I tried everything to format the card, copy the firmware, and update the camera.

It turns out that I had a MC-36 remote control connected. When I detached the remote, I could format the card from the camera, and I could update the firmware. Thanks to all for getting my thinking focused.

A connected accessory can prevent the update option from appearing. In this case, the issue was an MC-36 remote release attached to the camera. After disconnecting the remote, the camera allowed the card to be formatted in-camera and the firmware update option appeared normally.

For firmware updates, it’s best to:

  • disconnect accessories such as remote controls
  • format the memory card in the camera
  • copy the firmware .bin file to the card as directed by Nikon
  • reinsert the card and check the Firmware version menu again

If the update option is missing, remove any attached accessories first.
