I’m trying to install CHDK on a Canon SX210 IS using a MacBook Pro (OS X 10.10.3). I verified the camera firmware version, downloaded the matching CHDK build, and copied the files to the root of formatted 4GB and 8GB SD cards. After inserting the card and starting the camera with the playback/review button, I open the menu but usually do not see a Firmware Update option. It appeared once before, but the install didn’t work correctly. What is the correct way to install CHDK from macOS, and is there a simpler method?

There are some good tips about installing CHDK on a Mac listed here :

CHDK FAQ : Mac

Also, at the top of that page is a link to a utility called STICK that will do the complete install for you on a Mac, Windows, or Linux computer.

Yes—this is a known sticking point on macOS. The most helpful approach is to follow the CHDK Mac-specific install instructions and, even better, use the STICK utility. STICK is designed to automate the CHDK installation process on Mac, Windows, and Linux, including preparing the card correctly and copying the proper files.

If the Firmware Update menu item is missing, it usually means the card or files were not prepared exactly as CHDK expects. Using STICK avoids many of those manual setup errors.

In short:

  • Confirm you downloaded the CHDK build matching your camera’s firmware.
  • Use the CHDK Mac installation guide.
  • Prefer STICK to perform the full install and card setup automatically.

That is the simplest and most reliable method based on the community guidance.
