My Canon Rebel T2i displays the message “Err 70: Shooting is not possible due to an error. Turn the camera off and on again or re-install the battery.” It happened while shooting video with a Canon 50mm f/1.4 lens. I’ve already reset camera settings, removed and reinstalled the battery, and formatted the memory card, but the error remains. What does Err 70 usually indicate, and what troubleshooting steps make sense before sending the camera in?

From some google searching I've found this to be a common problem, specially for higher end bodies like 5D Mark II.

If this continues to happen even after you did what the camera instructed you to do, its best you send it back to Canon for a check. If its still under warranty, they'll fix it or replace it.

Also, did you upgrade your firmware or add a grip? Some people reported this error after they started using a grip or after they upgraded their firmware.

Err 70 is generally a camera malfunction rather than a simple settings issue. Since you’ve already tried the basic recovery steps the camera suggests, and the problem persists, the safest recommendation is to have Canon service inspect it.

A few things mentioned by other users are worth checking first:

  • If you recently updated the firmware, the error may have started after that.
  • If you added a battery grip, remove it and test the camera body alone.

If neither applies, or the error still happens, it likely needs professional repair. If the camera is still under warranty, Canon may repair or replace it.

In short: persistent Err 70 after battery removal/reset/card format usually points to a hardware or internal camera fault, so service is the practical next step.
