Canon EOS Rebel T2i shows Err 05 after pop-up flash raises

My Canon EOS Rebel T2i pops up the built-in flash in low light, but then I hear repeated clicking from the flash mechanism and get this message:

Err 05 — The built-in flash could not be raised. Turn the camera off and on again.

Once this happens, I can’t take any photos. Power cycling hasn’t fixed it. It seems like the camera may not be detecting that the flash is fully raised. Is there anything I can try myself, such as resetting settings, before sending it in for service? Has anyone seen this before?

I have experienced the same problem after the external flash is detached from my canon camera(T5i). The problem solved after i turned the camera off and on again. I think this is the problem in the software driver. Have you tried resetting all the settings or factory reset? If not try it, it should work.

One community report described a similar issue on a Canon T5i after removing an external flash, and in that case cycling power resolved it. Based on that and general troubleshooting, the safest thing to try yourself is a full camera settings reset/factory reset, then power the camera off and on again.

If the flash physically pops up but the camera still keeps trying to raise it and shows Err 05, that suggests the camera may not be detecting the flash position correctly. If a reset does not help, it is likely a hardware or service issue rather than something you can fix with settings.

Compressed air is unlikely to solve an internal flash detection problem, and forcing the mechanism is not recommended.

So the practical order is:

  1. Reset camera settings to defaults.
  2. Power off/on and test again.
  3. If the error continues, have the camera inspected for service.
