Canon 600D says an external flash is attached after removing it, so the built-in flash won’t pop up

After removing an external flash from my Canon 600D, the built-in flash no longer pops up. The camera menu still reports that an external flash is mounted even though the hot shoe is empty. What causes this, and how can I get the built-in flash working again?

There's a tiny switch inside the hotshoe (if I remember correctly, on the side below one of the "rails").
If this switch is stuck the camera will think an external flash is mounted.

The most likely cause is the hot-shoe detection switch being stuck. Inside the hot shoe there is a small switch/contact that tells the camera an external flash is attached. If it stays pressed or jammed, the camera disables the built-in flash because it still thinks a shoe-mounted flash is present.
Check the hot shoe carefully for the tiny switch/contact and see whether it moves freely. If it’s stuck, gently freeing it may restore normal operation. Avoid forcing anything or using anything abrasive on the contacts. If the switch is damaged or won’t release, the camera may need service.
