Canon EOS 500N built-in flash pops up, clicks, and shows flashing battery icon

My Canon EOS 500N works normally except for the built-in flash. When the flash pops up, the camera makes a strange clicking noise and the battery icon flashes on the display. I have tried multiple batteries, including new ones, but the problem stays the same. This happens both in automatic modes when the camera wants to fire the flash and when I try to use the flash manually. The camera has not been dropped or abused. Does this point to a flash-specific fault or a larger electronic problem?

The flashing battery icon is an error message. I suspect it is just a flash problem.

The camera needs to be repaired but it would be cheaper to buy a replacement for about $50 on eBay or from someone locally.

This most likely points to a fault in the built-in flash circuit rather than the whole camera. On cameras like this, a flashing battery icon can act as a general error warning, and the clicking you hear strongly suggests the flash charging circuit is failing to reach full charge—possibly a bad flash capacitor or related component.

Since you already tried fresh batteries with no change, weak batteries are unlikely to be the cause. It’s best to stop trying to use the flash, because repeated failed charging can worsen the damage.

If the rest of the camera works, you may still be able to use it without flash. But repair is usually not economical on an older EOS film body unless the camera has sentimental value or you have access to a specialist repair tech. In most cases, replacing the body is more practical than repairing the built-in flash.
