Canon EOS 5D Mark II shows Err 80 or won’t wake from sleep

My Canon EOS 5D Mark II sometimes won’t power up normally. If I remove and reinsert the battery, it starts working again, but once the camera goes to sleep or I switch it off, the problem returns. It will sometimes display: "Err 80 – Shooting is not possible due to an error. Turn the camera off and on again or re-install the battery." I’ve already tried removing and replacing the clock battery, but that didn’t help. Is there a known fix for this, or does it usually need Canon service?

I've just got my camera back from repair and this was apparently caused by water damage to the DC-DC board, an expensive repair but I hope that my camera will now work well for some time to come! I've not yet worked out how the water got in - but I'm suspecting a damp camera bag after a seaside shoot.

Err 80 on the 5D Mark II is a general hardware/electrical fault, so there isn’t one guaranteed cause. From the reported fixes here, it can be linked to an internal board issue (including possible moisture/water damage), and in some cases it required Canon service.

One reset step that helped at least one user was:

  1. Turn the camera off.
  2. Remove the main battery and CF card.
  3. Close all doors.
  4. Turn the camera on and hold the shutter button for 30 seconds.
  5. Turn it off, reinstall battery and card, then power on.

If that only helps temporarily—or not at all—the body likely needs inspection/repair by Canon or an authorized service center. Since the problem returns after sleep/power-off, and replacing the clock battery didn’t solve it, a professional repair is the most likely long-term fix.
