I dropped my Nikon D5100 and now it displays the message “Error: press shutter release button again.” What should I check first, and is there anything safe I can try before sending it for repair?

First, try removing and reinstalling the battery, or testing with a different fully charged battery. If the error started right after a drop, there’s a good chance the shutter mechanism is jammed or damaged.

At that point, the safest recommendation is to have the camera professionally serviced. While some people have managed to free a stuck shutter themselves, attempting to pry or force anything inside the camera can easily make the damage worse.

So the practical order is:

  1. Power off the camera.
  2. Reseat or swap the battery.
  3. If the error remains, stop using it and get it inspected/repaired.

Because the problem followed an impact, this is likely a mechanical fault rather than a simple settings issue.

Try swapping the battery. If that didn't work the shutter may be jammed in which case you should really take it to be serviced. (You can probably free up the shutter yourself but you risk breaking the camera worse. I had this happen on my D5100 and I was able to free the shutter with a gentle pry done with folder up paper... but I really don't recommend this technique as you can totally destroy the camera.)
