Nikon D5000 shows “press shutter release button again” and leaves the mirror up

My Nikon D5000 gives an error that says “press shutter release button again” when I try to take a photo. If I press it again, the same error appears and the photos come out black. When I remove the lens, the mirror is stuck in the up position. What does this indicate, and is there anything I should check before getting it repaired?

This usually points to a camera malfunction rather than a lens or settings issue. If the D5000 is showing an error in the viewfinder/display and the mirror is staying up, the camera likely has a shutter or mirror mechanism problem.

A simple thing to check is whether the camera shows a general error such as “ERR” in the viewfinder or on the display. If it does, and pressing the shutter again doesn’t clear it, the body will most likely need professional service.

Because the mirror is stuck up and your images are black, it’s a strong sign the camera isn’t completing the exposure cycle correctly. In that case, a repair shop is the appropriate next step.

Check the viewfinder for some kind of error code, I had the same issue with my D80, and there was just ERR message, if the same will happen to you, the DSLR will need to see a repair shop.
