Can I use an external intervalometer with a Nikon Coolpix P900 for 3-second timelapse shooting?

I want to shoot a timelapse on a Nikon Coolpix P900 by taking individual stills every few seconds, then assembling them into a video later. The built-in timelapse options are too limited for my needs, and in-camera results appear low resolution. I also tried the camera’s interval mode, but the shortest interval I can set is 30 seconds.

Is there any compatible remote or intervalometer that can trigger the P900 about every 3 seconds? I have not been able to find a shutter release accessory that clearly works with this camera.

What you're looking for is called an intervalometer. Unfortunately, nobody seems to have specifically made one that replaces Nikon's ML-L3 wireless shutter release (the remote that Nikon mentions on page 116 of the P900 Reference Manual).

This dpreview.com thread asks about your same problem — looking for an intervalometer for the P900. The only response links to a Gloxy Wireless Multi-exposure Intervalometer remote control for Nikon Coolpix P900 cameras. However, I don't believe it will actually work with the P900. I believe the mention of "P900" is linkbait. The pages states the remote replaces the Nikon MC-30, MC-DC2 and MC-DC1 remotes. These are all wired remotes. This indicates the remote probably includes a wireless receiver that has to plug into an appropriate connector on the camera, which the P900 lacks.

If you don't mind a bit of DIY, Limor Fried (Lady Ada) at Adafruit Industries has posted a fairly easy walkthrough of creating an intervalometer that emulates/replaces the ML-L3 using an Arduino kit, IR LED, and a couple other simple parts.

Probably not. What you need is an intervalometer, but the P900 does not appear to have support for a standard wired intervalometer connection. The camera uses Nikon’s ML-L3-style wireless remote system, and the commonly sold intervalometer remotes for Nikon typically replace wired remotes such as the MC-30, MC-DC2, or MC-DC1, which suggests they are not actually compatible with the P900.

So based on the available information, your practical options are limited to the camera’s built-in timelapse/interval features or experimenting with ML-L3-type remote triggering, if you can find a way to automate it. Be cautious with listings that claim P900 compatibility if they are really designed for Nikon’s wired remote ports.
