Are there cameras under $150 that can shoot time-lapse at 5-second intervals?

I currently make time-lapse sequences with a Nikon Coolpix S550 and software, but its shortest built-in interval is 30 seconds. I'm looking for a camera around $150 or less that can shoot at much shorter intervals, ideally about 5 seconds or faster. Are there any compact cameras or dedicated time-lapse options that fit this need?

Yes. For this budget, a few practical options were suggested:
- A Canon PowerShot running CHDK: Some inexpensive Canon compacts can use the CHDK add-on firmware, which often enables interval shooting beyond the camera’s stock features. This can be a low-cost way to get shorter intervals.
- A dedicated Brinno time-lapse camera: One answer pointed to a Brinno model around your budget with a custom interval setting from 5 seconds up to 12 hours. It’s designed specifically for time-lapse and may be a better fit if you want a simple, purpose-built solution.
- Some camcorders/video cameras: Certain video cameras include built-in time-lapse modes. If you don’t need high-resolution stills, this can also work.
So, yes—getting 5-second intervals at around $150 is realistic, especially with a used/cheap Canon compact + CHDK or a dedicated Brinno time-lapse camera.
