Why is my Nikon Coolpix P900 limited to f/8 in Manual mode?

I’m using a Nikon Coolpix P900 and was setting up for fireworks in Manual mode. With ISO 200 and 1/30s, the camera won’t let me choose an aperture smaller than f/8. I expected to be able to stop down to something like f/11, and thought maybe I had changed a setting by mistake. Is there a setting that limits this, or is f/8 the lens/camera’s maximum stop-down? If I can’t go smaller than f/8, what’s the best way to reduce exposure for fireworks?

Because of the small sensor the pixels are very small. If you use a smaller aperture the diffraction it causes will blur the image, so Nikon decided not to allow a smaller aperture. I have a P950 and the behavior is the same. You can drop the ISO to 100 to make up for the f/8 aperture and get the exposure you are seeking.

You likely didn’t change any setting—the P900’s aperture is physically limited to f/8. On this camera’s small sensor, stopping down beyond that would increase diffraction and noticeably soften the image, so Nikon doesn’t provide smaller apertures like f/11.

So yes: higher f-numbers mean a smaller opening, but on the P900 f/8 is as narrow as it goes.

For fireworks, if you need less light or a longer exposure, use other controls instead:

  • lower ISO to 100
  • use a longer shutter speed as appropriate
  • add a neutral density (ND) filter in front of the lens if needed

In short, f/8 is the camera’s limit, not a setting you accidentally changed.
