Why doesn’t the distance scale on my Yongnuo YN600EX-RT change correctly with aperture?

On my Yongnuo YN600EX-RT, the LCD distance scale seems wrong in manual flash mode. Example settings: ISO 100, 35mm, full power. Using the guide number formula (GN = f-number × distance), I’d expect the displayed usable distance to decrease as I stop down the aperture. But the flash shows the same distance for some full-stop changes, such as f/8 and f/11, and similarly for f/16 and f/22. Is this a known issue with this flash, or is there a reset or firmware fix that might correct it?

I have 3 of these flashes and have not experienced this problem. Only thing I can suggest is maybe downloading and installing the YN flash firmware update. Maybe try to "reset" the flash and start over from the beginning.

This does not sound like normal behavior. Based on the reported experience of another owner with multiple YN600EX-RT units, the distance scale should not typically behave this way.

The most likely first steps are:

  • reset the flash to factory defaults
  • check for and install the latest Yongnuo firmware update
  • then test again from scratch in manual mode

Keep in mind the on-screen distance scale is only an estimate and can vary with zoom position and other settings, but it still should change sensibly as aperture changes. If a full-stop aperture change produces the same displayed distance repeatedly, that suggests a glitch rather than expected operation.

If a reset and firmware update do not fix it, your unit may be faulty.
